How to Make Nutrient-Rich Herbal Infusions
Share
A nourishing herbal infusion is different from a tea. It is nutrient-rich – full of vitamins, minerals & enzymes that the body can easily assimilate. We love them because they are easy to make (a few minutes a day), easy to drink, and provide optimal nourishment for young children and elders alike.
It is important to use nutritive herbs and not aromatic herbs. Here are some favourites (you can shop for them here):
- Nettles
- Oatstraw
- Red Clover
- Marshmallow Leaf
- Alfalfa
- Mullein
- Linden
- Chickweed
- Hawthorn
- Hibiscus
- Violet
Make sure to NEVER use highly aromatic herbs to make infusions, as they will neither taste good nor be optimally nourishing. Aromatic herbs are better suited for a tea (shorter steep time).
HOW TO BREW:
Step 1: Place about 1/4 cup of herb into a 1L mason jar. More herb = more nutrition, but we recognize budgets exist! Try for at least 2tbsp of herb per 8 oz water.
Step 2: Fill the jar with boiling water, put a lid on it, and let it steep for 4-10 hours. We prepare before bed and let it steep overnight. If your house is warm, place it in the fridge. If you like, you can add a tiny pinch of another herb like mint or licorice root for flavour.
Step 3: Strain out the plant material (and compost it), and enjoy one or several cups of the herbal infusion daily. We prefer drinking these cold, but you can drink them warm too. Add lemon, honey, or any fixings of your liking.
Step 4: Store your herbal infusion in the refrigerator for up to 2 days.
